• 13bat species listed for South Gippsland
  • 3threatened species occasionally recorded

There are 13 bats listed for South Gippsland. The most common is the white-striped freetail, possibly because it is one of the only bats that makes a sound audible to humans.

Other commonly recorded bats include the little forest bat, lesser long-eared bat, Gould’s and chocolate-wattled bats. Three threatened species have been occasionally recorded: the grey-headed flying fox (nationally vulnerable), eastern bent-wing bat (nationally critically endangered) and yellow-bellied sheathtail bat (nationally vulnerable).

Actions in the plan

The BPP’s objectives, actions and measures are organised under nine Strategic Directions rather than by species group. Actions for threatened species sit under Strategic Direction 5: Take informed, targeted action for priority threatened species, and actions to protect, enhance and connect habitat under Strategic Directions 1, 2 and 3.
